2022 BMC Timemachine 02 TWO Bike

As with the BMC Timemachine 01, BMC is having a tough time topping their work on the Timemachine 02. This iteration took years to develop, an insane amount of research and development to go from their previous timed event bike to this current timed event bike. It’s more aero, it’s more comfortable, it’s more practical. So, considering the success of the 02, it’s understandable that they’re sticking with this design and updating the paint and componentry, to provide you with the latest on those, which themselves undergo a multi-year development process. The One comes in Orange, with Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8050 and Mavic Comete Pro Carbon Exalith wheels. The Two comes in White with Shimano Ultegra R8000 components and Shimano RS330 wheels. The Three comes in Grey, with Shimano 105 5800 components and Shimano RS010 wheels.

The new BMC timemachine 02 does what the previous iteration did so well: make the bike easier to work on, easier to fit, easier to customize, and easier to buy than the timemachine 01 while retaining almost all of the advantages of the halo version.

The bike looks different than the previous 02. It’s only different in that it’s faster and easier to fit. Win-win. It’s also UCI-legal.

Faster. BMC was happy with the geometry and straight line, wind tunnel aerodynamics, but wanted to make the bike better in messy real-world situations. So, they worked on improving crosswind stability and hiding water bottles. These two things may seem small but they’re actually huge. Rare is the day when you’re riding in still air, or a block headwind. More likely, the wind is coming from one side. The new tubing profiles, a refinement of their subA thinking, are as fast in a straight line, but present less to crosswinds, meaning you don’t have the fight the bike to stay in a straight line. Likewise, the new shaping does a much better job of shrouding water bottles on the down and/or seat tubes. There are even two positions for mounting bottles on the downtube. Lower is more aero, but the higher allows for a seat tube bottle.

The fork is new to the timemachine, it’s faster than the old fork, and this is a simpler model than what you’ll find on the 01. The legs are splayed out wider, to make it easier for air to pass between the legs and the wheels. The fork, and the rear triangle, are designed to take rims up to 28mm wide and tires up to 27mm wide. This fork is designed to mesh with the downtube behind the crown for aerodynamics. And the legs are shaped to form a nice trailing edge behind the conventional brakes for better air flow.

The final aero touch is the rear storage box. This is not UCI-legal, but it is for multi-sport riders. It’s big enough to fit a tubular plus tools and inflator. The box mounts behind the seat post when the forward mounting option is employed.

To offer the most fit options in their P2P, Position 2 Perform, system, the seat post has a rearward mount and a forward mount. In addition, the saddle clamp  has four positions. This yields a huge range of adjustment, going from a virtual 71.5 to a virtual 80.8-degree seat angle, with 124mm of total fore-aft adjustment.

At the front end, the stem conventionally mounts to a 1 1/8” steerer tube. While it is not as aero as what you’ll find on the 01, it has the potential to help you find your perfect aero position if you’re not conventionally-proportioned or flexible. You can run a rise stem, a flat stem, run spacers underneath it or not. And the same goes for the flexibility of bars. If you’ve got a favorite bar system you don’t want to part with, the 02 lets you have that system and the rest of the BMC aero package.

BMC likes system integration. They have Dual Transmission Integration here. You can run electronic or mechanical, even hydraulic shifting. The rear brake is under the bottom bracket and hidden from the wind. The bottom bracket standard employed is BB86.

Another big benefit to the timemachine 02 is the ease of servicing. With an exposed front brake and conventional stem, not only is wrenching easier, but so, too, is dis/assembly for travel.

The BMC timemachine 02 brings real world smarts to the scientific pursuit of greater speed.
