2022 Pinarello Angliru 105 Bike
Pinarello
keeps defining entry level upward. You can see their work in the
Angliru 105 Bike. It is a sleek carbon-fiber jewel that gives you an
uncompromising road platform, a solid component mix, and a healthy
helping of Pinarello MoST bits, which add value and bling.
First, let’s focus on the frame. Pinarello selected T600
carbon-fiber plies as the dominant material for the molded diamond and
fork. It has Onda, wave, shaping on the fork to dampen vibration coming
up through the front wheel, and curved seat stays to do the same for
the road coming up through the rear wheel. The main triangle has
extensive shaping very similar to those you’ll find on their high-zoot
frames. The head tube is shaped for stiffness and aerodynamics, and to
hide the 1 1/8†to 1 ½†steered. The down tube is shaped for
aerodynamics and lateral stability, with the lower part flattened in
back to help hide your water bottles from the wind. The top tube is
shaped with a bow in it as well as flattened, to add comfort and more
lateral stiffness. The seat tube is round, and designed to work with a
round 31.6mm seat post because round tubes magnificently handle stress
in all directions
The frame also takes advantage of several technologies Pinarello
pioneered. The frame is asymmetric from left to right. They found that
the stresses on the drive side differ from the non-drive, so they’ve
tuned the shapes and ply placement to maximize lateral stiffness and
minimize weight. They’ve deployed their Think 2 System, which allows
you to install electronic shifting easily, and they run the cables and
wires internally. And, for reliability and ease of service, they’ve
built the bottom bracket around the Italian threaded standard.
Geometry is fairly traditional road racing, with a more stack and
less reach than you’ll find on models like the Dogma. This results in
the rider being able to find a higher position for the bars and stem
easily, as there won’t be much of a need for stack spacers. The chain
stays are 413mm, which is a bit longer than you’ll find on some road
racing bikes, but they allow you room to fit 28mm wide tires with ease.
Most of Shimano’s 105 group is installed on the Angliru. It’s
benefits from trickle-down tech. The crank is basically the Dura-Ace
version of a few iterations ago. The derailleurs work off the same
shifting geometries of current Dura-Ace, and the STI levers have the
body and feel of current Dura-Ace as well.
Pinarello specifies their house brand components for the stem, bars,
seatpost, and brakes. The pieces are strong, light, color-matched to
the frame, and save a bundle.
The Pinarello Angliru 105 Bike is a dedicated road racer with a
value that is as prodigious as the mountain it’s named for is steep.
